FRINGE WORLD Festival 2019 Opening Weekend
Posted in Media Releases
This weekend Perth’s favourite summer celebration begins and four weeks of amazing entertainment and fun times begin as FRINGE WORLD Festival 2019 opens.
The biggest annual event in Western Australia runs from 18 January until 17 February with 700 shows across 138 venues and performance spaces all over Perth.
FRINGE WORLD Festival Director Amber Hasler said Fringe time is a magical time of year when the people of Perth embrace their inner Fringe Binger and experience entertainment from international and local performers.
“With more than 700 shows there is absolutely something for everyone and no excuse to be bored for the next four weeks! We can’t wait to see the reaction from people to our new shows and events and look forward to welcoming back our audience favourites.”
For those new to FRINGE WORLD Festival, the best place to start a Fringe adventure is Fringe’s newest hub, Yagan Square. This weekend you can catch LITTLE DEATH CLUB, the darkest, funniest and most debauched kabarett club this side of Berlin; illusionist MATT TARRANT; masters of aerial grace and beauty LE AERIAL; and, after three increasingly inappropriate editions, Fringe's naughtiest puppets PUPPEROTICA.
Perth's favourite Fringe playground is The Woodside Pleasure Garden in Northbridge, home to the biggest range of entertainment in the Fringe. It’s the perfect place to enjoy Perth’s balmy summer evenings with friends or family with buskers’ entertainment every night, free performances from everyone’s favourite FRINGE WORLD Festival mermaids and more food and refreshment choices than ever before.
This weekend you can catch indigenous dance sensations and landmark dance/theatre company DJUKI MALA; circus superstars CIRCUS’CISION, returning to FRINGE WORLD Festival after a complete sell-out season in 2018; plus plenty of shows and events to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays.
Meanwhile at The Ice Cream Factory, be enthralled at the WA premiere of FUEGO CARNAL, a high-octane spectacle of "wild stunts, exotic beats... mesmerising flames... packed full of magical jaw-dropping moments, fuelled by sensual choreography and a wicked sense of humour" all of which takes place in its own dedicated, custom-made venue The Empyrean; while Perth’s favourite show LA SOIRÉE returns after three sell-out FRINGE WORLD seasons - reimagined, bigger and bolder than ever!
There’s also plenty of fun times to be had at FRINGE Central at The Perth Cultural Centre including Matso’s Broome Time, taking over the Urban Orchard and featuring the best Sunday sessions at the Festival. Highlights of the opening weekend include the WA premiere of THE VIOLENT YEARS, a queer cult cinema garage rock concert you won't soon forget; the WA premiere of Cam Venn’s new physical circus comedy CHARLES HORSE LAYS AN EGG; while bearded Belfast-based international circus performer Logy is back by popular demand for his new comedy show PRICE OF TWO PINTS.
With an average ticket price of $25 and a range of fabulous free community events, FRINGE WORLD is accessible to everyone. The program features artists from Australia and all over the world but just over half of the program is from Western Australian artists. FRINGE WORLD and Principal Partner Woodside shine a light on our incredible local artists through the Homegrown Heroes program and we encourage everyone to see at least one local show this Fringe.
Some of those local artists will take centre stage in the part choose-your-own-adventure, part film-set, part playground immersive theatre experience that is A MIDNIGHT VISIT, which takes over the Girls School from 22 January to 3 March. Direct from its sensational debut in Sydney, A MIDNIGHT VISIT will be reimagined for the Perth audience, who will experience a performance like no other in which they will encounter strange characters, thrilling scenes and macabre splendour as they sojourn through the institution’s corridors and rooms.
It’ll be easier than ever before to get to Fringe shows thanks to the special late night red Fringe CAT running between the Perth Busport and Girls School.
UBER, the official ride of FRINGE WORLD, will be offering Free UBER Peddle bike rides for festival goers in Northbridge and #UberFringe cars will be popping up around town - if you’re lucky enough to hop in one you might catch your very own backseat gig or win some Fringe tickets.
