FRINGE WORLD Festival 2016 kicks off the month of Fringe-uary!

Westralia’s own FRINGE WORLD Festival kicks off today with a five day opening super weekend packed with an epic program of events for younglings and grown-ups alike. Brimming with free and fun entertainment to keep the whole family entertained, there is something for everyone. Fringe only comes around once a year and it’s finally here!

FRINGE WORLD 2016 runs from 22 January to 21 February and over the coming four weeks of Fringe-uary goodness, Perth City and surrounds play host to over 150 FRINGE WORLD venues and more than 700 events, making it easier than ever to binge on fringe.

The five day super opening weekend from January 22 til Australia Day on January 26 is the ideal way to keep the Summer vibes going and celebrate all the things we love about Summer in Perth.

Festival Director Amber Hasler said, “Fringe is the best time of year in Perth, when there’s so much entertainment to choose from and the weather and atmosphere is just Perthect.”

“The opening weekend is a great time to celebrate Australia Day in a chillaxed, welcoming and vibrant way” Ms Hasler said. “Where else can you watch fireworks, check out a show and soak up an incredible atmosphere over a bite to eat?”

The Pleasure Garden transforms into Little Pleasures on Saturday and Sunday from 3pm-5pm with a free and fun program of events and treats to keep the kids entertained. The Garden is also home to the FRINGE WORLD Mermaids, the Get Lost Maze, a special kids-only Silent Disco and the quirky Pleasure Craft.

The adult’s oasis in the Fringe World Orchard is home to a cracker rotation of nightly DJ's, Silent Disco, plus it's the best place to enjoy a Perthect Australia Day with firework views. Grab your bestie or sweetheart for a ride on the FRINGE WORLD Ferris Wheel in the Perth Cultural Centre, and enjoy a spectacular view of Northbridge. For grumbling bellies, there's a host of tasty food for you to enjoy in the Perth Cultural Centre or head to The Pleasure Garden for the best outdoor BBQ this side of the big prawn.

Grab yourself a bargain all weekend long with the extra special $10 RushTix available for select shows – you can buy them from the FRINGE WORLD website or at the box office (subject to availability).

The five day opening weekend fun sets the pace for a month of entertainment delights.

Festival favourite Le Gateau Chocolat (UK) returns to Perth with two brand new shows; Icons, a cabaret of eclectic music, and Duckie, a reimagining a childhood favourite The Ugly Duckling, for the little ones. This international Fringe superstar is joined by other overseas Fringe favourites descending upon Perth for the Summer season, including ‘global phenomenon’ Frisky and Mannish with a brand new show CabaRIOT; gin-loving, manbeast-riding, accordion-wielding, globe-trotting, multi-award-winning cult musical comedy duo EastEnd Cabaret and fresh from a sell-out run at 2015’s Edinburgh Fringe, Puddles the Clown invites us to join the Pity Party - a must-see for his melodramatic anthems and unique comedic hijinks.

Crossing the Nullabor to bask in the Fringe-uary fabulousness is the woman notoriously known as Australia's Queen of Burlesque, Imogen Kelly, who will take the audience on a time travel ride to the judged and damned women of history's pages in Herstory. After a dazzling, sell-out run in 2015, the larger-than-life BRIEFS boys return to Perth with their jaw-dropping, eye-popping mix of vaudeville, acrobatics and burlesque. Eccentric siblings The Kransky Sisters are bringing their unique style of musical comedy back to town by popular demand in The Kransky Sisters: Piece of Cake.

2015’s home of comedy, The Gold Digger is back and bursting with even more laughs, playing host to some of the country’s best funny-people. Dave Callan (A Little Less Conversation 2), Sammy J (The Sammy J Songbook) and Janelle Koenig (Flashback) are just some of the leading comedians you can expect to see there.

FRINGE WORLD is the perfect opportunity to embrace all this fine city has to offer, including some of our talented local artists. Why not check out some of Westralia’s finest through Woodside Homegrown Heroes, a program that is shining a light on our talented WA performers. A massive shout out goes to local legends The Last Great Hunt who are bringing their 2015 Martin Sims Award performance, Monroe and Associates back for another season alongside new works The Great Ridolphi and The Crossing. Fringe wouldn’t be Fringe without Famous Sharron, hypnotist Matt Hale will have you clucking like a chicken in no time and the company that brought you '10,000 Beers' in 2015 now presents 7 Needs - 7 short plays from 7 of Australia's most lauded writers by 7 Perth directors.

The 2016 Fringe footprint extends well beyond the city giving you the opportunity to have a taste of Fringe-uary both in the city and in your local neighbourhood. Sunset Veranda (Scarborough) returns to the Fringe family with their second season plus Freo Royale (Fremantle), Midlandia (Midland) and Mandurah are all returning with fabulous offerings. For the first time, Geraldton will be joining in the fun with a ship load of comedy and cabaret entertainment delights held in the Funtavia.

Also a first for 2016, the people of Perth are invited to a lovely evening on the inlet at the opening of Elizabeth Quay and the launch of the FRINGE WORLD Fairground.

The FRINGE WORLD Fairground will be big on fun and offering families and kids great value entertainment from 29 January during Perth’s buzzing summer festival season. Everyone is invited to celebrate the opening of Elizabeth Quay and the FRINGE WORLD Fairground Grand Opening on Friday 29 January with amusements, treats and frivolity for all ages. It’s the place to be with free fringe performances including the FRINGE WORLD Mermaids, acrobats, face painting fairies, a vintage carousel plus live music and dance displays. Record-breaking and awardwinning circus-cabaret sensation Limbo will settle in for the season at the Palais des Glaces Spiegeltent, right next door to The Urban Roller Club, Perth’s first outdoor roller rink, rolling into town complete with skates, bass, beats and eats.

FRINGE WORLD Festival 2016 commences January 22 and extends over four sensational weeks until 21 February.

Tickets for all FRINGE WORLD shows can be found at fringeworld.com.au and average only $24! Get in quick as some shows are selling out fast.

The Festival gratefully acknowledges the support of its partners including Community Partner Lotterywest, Woodside and the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority.
