Making their debut performance at the 2021 FRINGE WORLD Festival, Everything’s Kinda Stupid! gives a satirical peek into the often hostile world of social media. Following the lives of podcasters Sugar and Monty – two Aussie ‘nobodies’ who accidentally catch the eye of the algorithm – the pair find their friendship tested as their newfound popularity as they try to keep their listeners… listening.
Social media influencers hold a unique place in the information landscape. In an age when anyone can pick up a camera – or a microphone – there’s no knowing telling who their voice might reach, and there are many who are unprepared for expectations and criticisms that come with having a large following.
Everything’s Kinda Stupid! is a cautionary tale that explores the human face behind the online persona, comedically commenting on everything from intrusive and overly-critical fandoms to the double-edged sword of meme culture to the consequences of poorly-planned guest appearances, giving you some truly colourful characters along the way.
The podcast guests make for a hilariously awkward series of encounters that are broadcasted live for the world to hear. Public reaction and cancel culture then leads into a growing beef (or ‘tofu’) between the friends and while the pacing wasn’t always even, the show still ended in a way that was both wholesome and uplifting.
There are a few stellar performances amongst the small cast, and the actors make excellent use of both their props and their limited performance space, showcasing some dynamic physical acting alongside the quick and quirky dialogue. However, there were times when the sound was overpowering, with loud music and overlapping dialogue sometimes drowning out the jokes. But noise aside, you will not leave the theatre without a few good laughs.
Everything’s Kinda Stupid! is small piece of stupid fun, and goes perfectly with a glass of rosé.
