YUCK Circus is very good at being disgusting. It’s the disgusting pick-up lines often used on women. It’s the “disgusting” bodily functions bestowed upon females from puberty.
This circus takes a look at the everyday disgusting and sets it to a soundtrack that you will keep your toes tapping.
The seven-strong, all-female troupe mix dance, acrobatics and some clowning in a joyous display that takes a cheeky dig at the patriarchy, while juggling female issues.
The women don fake moustaches, stuff socks strategically in their briefs, prance around with their lady gardens on show and even binge on Nutella on stage, all while contorting and manipulating their bodies in well-choreographed routines.
But it’s not your average circus and the performers know it.
“We put this bit in for people who came expecting more, you know, circus,” says one YUCK member, before they reluctantly perform a beautiful acro-balance routine for the purists in the audience.
The women shine the most when showing off their strength and acrobatic prowess. However, the show does lack some cohesion, with a few confusing monologues that drag on between the action.
The aerial straps act is a highlight that leaves the audience in stitches. It starts off as a graceful piece, accompanied by live music and singing, then quickly plummets into the ridiculous.
If it’s a traditional circus show you’re after, this probably isn’t the Fringe show for you. There is no doubt this show will leave some scratching their heads.
But if you’re a woman who enjoys a light-hearted laugh at the patriarchy, or a man secure enough to do so, then make sure you catch YUCK Circus at FRINGE WORLD Festival while you can.
