I felt uplifted after attending’s yesterday’s The Blessed Assurance – Providence Gospel Choir and this I am sure was the intention of the show sung by a recreational choir based in Floreat and supported by a 4-piece band of talented WAAPA trained musicians.

The show included several talented soloists alongside the gospel choir. The music inspired clapping and movement in the audience during the show and ended with a standing ovation and cheering by most audience members.

Ranging from traditional and contemporary, the songs were rich, harmonious, and powerful. Stand out songs included Going Up Yonder which was the finale and without a doubt the best song of the show with great vocals by the soloist, who was also a joint choir master. I also enjoyed Won’t Let Anything Stop Me, That’s How the Good Lord Works and Confidence in You.

The history of some of these gospel songs was new to me and really interesting with reference to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, past American presidents, and famous jazz singers.

Members of the gospel choir looked like they were really enjoying themselves on stage, and I loved the hand expressions of the choir masters’ which elevated the sung song at times.

There was a clear religious message, but I doubt that mattered when the songs were intended to uplift any person who listened with the message of hope, joy, and assurance. For me, that was the magic of the music allowing space to connect to ourselves and others.

This is a multi-faith, any age group kind of show. Good for families, friends, or groups. The venue provided a great opportunity to spoil myself pre-show with afternoon tea and then listen to the inspiring music – meaning I left feeling all round fulfilled and inspired to thread the pavement again today.
