It was an absolute pleasure to attend Tea for Two – A Stéphane Grappelli Tribute & Night of Jazz Violin last night at The Duke of George. I’d go as far as to say the performance was a highlight of this year’s FRINGE WORLD Festival calendar.
I knew it was going to be a great evening, but what surprised me was how much joy and fun Emily Gelineau and her three-piece band brought to the stage. I left the performance feeling completely satisfied and immediately reached for my FRINGE WORLD Festival calendar, eager to find more events featuring these talented young musicians.
Gelineau was the standout of the night, effortlessly moving through the audience, sitting in a chair, and even doing can-can kicks—all while deftly playing the violin. The music of jazz violin grandfather Stéphane Grappelli seemed to allow Gelineau to find her own musical expression, confidently stepping away from her classical training. Her violin, piano, and vocals were equally impressive.
There was just the right amount of chit-chat, with Gelineau weaving her own musical journey into Grappelli’s and highlighting their shared Brazilian connections. It was a lovely touch to end the evening with an album Grappelli recorded while in Sydney. Interestingly, an audience member recalled seeing Grappelli perform at Perth Concert Hall in the 1970s, adding a nostalgic connection to the night.
Personally, the gypsy jazz pieces were my favorite, especially Gelineau’s rendition of Tea for Two, with Daphne coming in a close second. I also enjoyed seeing each band member have their own moment in the spotlight during the set.
I would recommend this event for a date night, a catch-up with friends and family, or even as a solo outing. The à la carte dining and full table service during the performance were a bonus, with delicious bar snacks and prompt service.
This is a five-star ***** event and absolutely not to be missed!
