Local producer Autumn Daze brought “Seasonal Tease: Life’s A Beach” to the Connections stage for the ongoing series’ FRINGE WORLD debut. Ably guided through this summer-themed show by MC and sparkly lighthouse Minxy Milva, the audience toured a virtual shorefront populated by a plethora of burlesque artists – a burly beach, as it were. Though not specifically Burleigh Heads itself on the Gold Coast.
A night when even the stage assistant seagulls practised their method acting backstage, as intent as either Willem Dafoe or Robert Pattinson in that other Lighthouse, each and every performer this evening gave their all, and no-one could be divined as having left anything in reserve.
From the imperious yet still somehow demure stage presence of Brisbane’s Summer Dragonfly, through Aria Scarlett, who shied from the usual pop sensibilities to turn her classical opera setting all the way to eleven, a most unexpected yet glorious palate cleanser, to Nia Twerk Noir’s very literal cheeky tribute to nude beaches, the sheer variety of disparate ideas brought to seasonally appropriate fully formed fruition was fantastic.
The show stepped away from the beach for a moment to visit the country’s interior with CC Satine. As if a smouldering Celtic witch had sparked, and was then consumed by, the fiercest of Australian bushfires, this gorgeous routine was a strong reminder that southern summers included the all too terrible as well as the fun, fluffy, and comedic.
Brenda Wee, in the dictionary as the very definition of fun, fluffy, and comedic, almost stole the entire show with “Mariguana Cha-Cha-Cha”, a heady, potent blend – watch out for the kick – which was a successful combination, somehow, of the Atomic Age if it met Bride of Frankenstein if they both met Cheech and Chong.
The third instalment in an increasingly polished quarterly series, “Seasonal Tease: Life’s A Beach” showcased artists extremely committed to their craft, and who brought the same high energy to this Wednesday night at Connies as they would to Las Vegas or the other pinnacles of the art. Pound for pound, Perth punches well above its weight in burlesque, and this production was another fabulous example thereof.
