It’s a late-night show with a very hot sizzle factor and an 18+ rating. But hey, the Midnight Special delivers in spades. There’s a very high ‘Whoop’ factor to this show as befits the slick and sultry moves on stage. The dancers all have the moves, the twisting poses, the buttock slaps, the come-hither looks and the show is presented as a series of dances, all of which are scalding hot.
The Midnight Special is put together by the Perth-based House of Honeys dance company. The dance troupe on the night comprises ten dancers together with a fire eater. It’s neither striptease nor burlesque with an emphasis on the quality of the dancing but there is still that hint of mischief. The many brilliant costumes the dancers wear are great – so much allure with so little material!
A banging soundtrack sets the tone throughout with songs from the last few decades dialled up to suit the dancing. Contemporary stuff together with Blondie, the Doors, Elvis and other classics. The lighting also was well done and contributed to the exotic mood. One of the highlights for me was when one of the dancers showed off her lovely singing voice in a slower seductive number. What a shame she was only given the opportunity to sing one song.
Be warned there is a bit of audience participation – so choose your seat carefully. On this particular night, our audience participant, despite his best efforts to look nonchalant with Honeys dripping all over him, was more like a rabbit in the headlights – but wow, did he have a big smile on his face when he returned to his seat!
This is pure late-night bad-ass dance-based cabaret. Whoop whoop yeah!
