This jazz band had the joint jumpin'.
Adam Hall's reputation proceeds him. He is an accomplished trumpeter, composer and singer. The world is his stage, having performed in Singapore, America, Germany, France and Spain. Yet he calls Perth home. This is fortunate for all of us at the performance on Friday night at The Courtyard of The State Theatre. 'Adam Hall & The Velvet Playboys' brought the house down.
This world premiere event saw Adam and his posse perform at their best. He is a master: showman, entertainer, vocalist, musician and leader of the pack. With Turner the Bunsen burner (saxophone, guitar and vocals), Tim Voustas (keys) and Sam Markham (double bass), to name a few. The 6 Velvet Playboys belt out smooth New Orleans Jazz that really was a party.
The performance covered everything from traditional jazz tunes of Louis Armstrong (Oh When The Saints) to jazzed-up renditions of songs such as Walk Like An Egyptian (The Bangles) and a funny tune Felicia No Cappicia. There were plenty of laughs along the way with Adam adept at witty repartee. He also encouraged a great deal of audience participation which the crowd then took to the next level.
People were singing along and dancing in the aisles (me included), the atmosphere was electric and the joyful energy was infectious. Towards the end, some of the audience formed a conga line that snaked its way through the tables and upstairs seating. It was hard to find someone who wasn't grooving along, with plenty of audience members swaying in their seats. This was a high-energy show that was not only technically brilliant but so enjoyable it received a standing ovation. Also suitable for most demographics.
