A monstrously big adventure. What fun!
James Hancox, a few cheap-looking DIY props, a handful of very bad jokes, some masterfully managed sonic accompaniment, a brief sketch of an idea and away we go.
He’s funny, physically quite ridiculous when required, and an absolute charmer who had the audience prepared to do pretty well anything he wanted in a matter of minutes. Quite astonishing really.
With “Whos There?”, the performance itself is a living, breathing creature, and the audience are as much a part of the show, collectively, as Hancox is.
He approaches his comedy much like that of a conductor at a freeform jazz festival, or, say, Frank Zappa guiding his band and his audience with a twitch of a finger or a raised eyebrow.
There’s a mysterious storyline, a beginning, and an ending which is reached by the circuitous route of improvisation by both himself and the audience, with many aspects of the plot and most of the minutiae decided, and quite hilariously performed, by the audience.
Some of tonight’s madcap journey involved invisible milk, apples, Abba, an engineering quiz and rubber gloves. Somehow, it all made sense.
Tomorrow night and the night after – who knows? But whatever the evening throws up, it’s guaranteed to be oodles of fun and strangely satisfying.
Go see it….twice!
