Kelly Mac has brought her new show to FRINGE WORLD and most of the audience were not sure what to expect as Kelly’s promotional material describes her as a comedian, writer, slacker and grandma.
It was basically a full-on stand-up comedy with topics ranging from some regional stereotyping to the challenges of Generation X and the surprises to be found in pondering your ancestors.
I loved Kelly’s energetic style seemingly hardly pausing for breath yet still easy to follow and her punchline delivery was spot on.
Some of the material was quite in-yer-face which was a surprise considering the early evening time slot. As would be expected with any new show, certain jokes and stories worked better than others, but good comedy is all about pushing the boundaries and Kelly definitely gave the ‘good taste’ line an almighty shove at times.
There were some very funny moments in the show mostly arising from the gentler observational material and some of the vulgarity-based gags. Unfortunately, the very tasteless stuff fell flat for the early evening audience. Hopefully Kelly will keep developing the material and weed out those bits that don’t work so well.
Kelly resides in Nana Vale in New South Wales which is also home to the once-muscular Russell Crowe – needless to say he copped a bit of a shredding which went down very well.
Kelly certainly has the delivery, confidence and presence of a top-class stand-up comedian and, if she can get her material a little more aligned with the expectations of the audience, or garner a late-night slot, then she is going to make a lot of people piss themselves.
