Engaging and Entertaining – The smile never left my face!

Lawrence Mooney may not have been a household name for me prior to this show, but the anticipation in the room hinted at a show to look forward to. There was none of that nervousness from the audience wondering why they were there and was this really going to be a show worthy of coming out on a Tuesday night!

As soon as Lawrence took the stage, my lips curled into a smile and pretty much didn’t leave for the next hour. While this is definitely a work in progress (still not even sure why pigeonhole – although you will enjoy some bird interpretation!), I felt we were on the journey with him and felt in safe hands from the get-go. His opening Perth jokes did well to set the mood and were welcomed by the audience as they were pretty well on point. The show meanders a little, but every line brought laughter and at numerous stages through the show, some loud guffaws!!

It must be hard to be a comedian in this day and age, Lawrence took us close to the edge quite a few times, but I didn’t feel anyone was offended. His self-deprecating humour served as a unifying force, inviting everyone to laugh together.

While he had to refer to his notes by the time he hit the halfway mark, he had prepared us for it and pretty sure everyone felt like me, that we were happy and willing guinea pigs in the show. There is no sense of ego, and while the material is raw, his delivery oozes a confidence and a level of confidence that comes from his years in the business.

The last piece of the evening was a recent personal story that he shared with humble sincerity and once I realised that there was no punchline, I could only wish him well as he takes on his next life challenge. The show is a mix of storytelling, commentary, and some great lines. I would highly recommend this show to anyone who enjoys the comedic experience.
