It’s immediately obvious why History of House has garnered accolades and sold-out shows. A collaboration between ARIA-nominated DJ Groove Terminator and three-time Grammy®️-winners Soweto Gospel Choir, this show is an absolute must-see this Fringe season.
The Soweto Gospel Choir is breathtaking beyond words. A choir seemingly exclusively made up of lead singers, each vocalist brought something unique to the repertoire. From the 70’s through to the 00’s the choir performed hit-after-hit never missing a beat. This collaboration with DJ Groove Terminator, an icon of Australian dance culture, is a match made in heaven.
History of House feels like a long overdue homage to not only house music itself but also to the black women who pioneered the genre. ‘Ride on Time’ and ‘I Feel Love’ are songs that I’ve been telling people for years are “so hard to sing!” (I’m not a singer, I’m just obnoxious). Seeing these songs performed live with perfect vocals is honestly something I’ll never forget.
This show is a welcome reminder of the need for communities like this. House music was born out of connection and to this day is able to bring all kinds of people together to dance and party in an environment that is safe and non-discriminatory. The vibe in the room was incredible - and I went to the matinee! Even at two in the afternoon on a 30+ degree day, the energy brought by the performers and audience was unbelievable. History of House brought together the young and the old (and local legend Queency) to dance the afternoon away and party like it was 1999. Post-pandemic and in a time of global turmoil, this show reminds us that we are all human and the most powerful weapon we have is connection.
History of House is a fun and powerful tribute with infectious energy. The well-deserved buzz around this show is only growing, so get your tickets now!
