Michael Shafar is a comedian whom you may have seen on Network 10's The Project and Studio 10, or ABC's Comedy Bites. Or you may never have even heard of him. Still, the Jewish testicular cancer survivor bought his comedy show to 2023 FRINGE WORLD titled: Well Worth The Chemo.
Despite the name of the show, it doesn’t necessarily centre around his experience with Chemotherapy. He also discusses other topics like colonization, the British Royal Family, racism and his own Judaism. Shafar explains how he believes women should be able to drink and drive to get home safely, and if they hit people it's okay, because what kind of person is roaming the streets at 3 am on a Sunday? He then delves into the death of Queen Elizabeth and the general customs of the Royal Family and how people hate Megan Markle over
Prince Andrew and how in some ways, Hitler is better than Queen Elizabeth.
This show is, at times, offensive. It’s offensive in the kind of way where you do that low-sounding laugh and look around wondering if it’s ok to laugh at this. He goes on to discuss his Judaism and how some people are extremely concerned with offending the wrong group, so they ask if it’s okay to call a Jewish person ‘A Jew’. He discusses what religion has it best and whether someone who has slept with a person of the same sex and didn’t like it is straighter than a person who has only ever slept with the opposite sex.
Well Worth The Chemo offers the best of Shafars comedy, humour and his natural charisma is contagious. I think the best way to describe his comedy shows is a review from his oncologist: "Great show, Michael. You were well worth the chemo."
