The Latebloomers’ new show Scotland! is stupid, clever and incredibly funny. Built on physical comedy and mime, the show involves three Scotsmen doing Scotsmen things; fishing, climbing mountains and eating shortbread.
The show is simple, featuring shambolic Scottish costumes and budget props. No audience member is exempt from participation, but don’t let that put you off; the performers have a wonderful ability to make the audience feel safe enough to let go of inhibitions, feel the joy and become part of the scene.
Speaking of scenes, my favourite was when an audience member dressed as an elk and had a mimed fist fight with one of the Scotsman. If that doesn’t make any sense, you’re right, it doesn’t. But it is definitely something you should witness at least once in your life.
The Latebloomers are a delight. It is amazing how much this trio can create with so little. With a bit of vocalisation and a few hand gestures, you’re watching a bird fly by, or a solider raging in battle. The three performers have a natural rhythm and preciseness that can only come from years of working together, and it is utterly captivating to watch.
One member of the trio, Samuel Dugmore, was a particular standout for me. Not only does he know how to break character just at the right moment to deliver a witty, improvised punchline, but he also has the voice of an angel. I could easily watch a whole show of him singing Scottish folk songs, but in this show, I had to just settle for one or two.
The premise of the show is straightforward, but it is a show that will keep you on your toes. I could never quite predict what was going to happen next, but it all seemed to make sense (in a very bizarre, non-sensical way). Scotland! is a great all-ages show that will have you laughing the entire way through.
