Funny and fabulous!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the ‘game show’ component of “Drag Show the Game Show” but it involved the two sides of the audience being divided into opposing ‘teams’, with an assigned ‘drag mother’ whom we were to support. Then commenced five rounds of bizarre and unruly fun, including a game of ‘gay or straight’ and mock adverts demonstrating how the queens could sell their trauma during Pride. The two team leaders, Dandrogyny and Zelda Moon, were both enthralling personas with glorious costumes, while Lazy Susan brought the show together by adding drama and comedic flair as the ‘host’.

The comedy of this show would particularly appeal to younger queer audiences, with nods to online culture and contemporary gay ‘inside jokes’. In saying that, there were elements of the show that all could enjoy.

This is a great show for those wanting to see drag operate in a slightly more unique way, while still getting the occasional classic lip sync dance battle moment. All of the segments were enjoyable and humorous, however certain choices could have been refined to make them exemplary. I also would have liked a more clear continuation of the idea that the audience were ‘budding drag babies’ that was introduced at the start. An element that was executed well, however, was the extensive involvement of the audience in the show, making for a thoroughly engaging 70 minutes of fun. The balance of comedy, competition and a few moments of sincerity was also enjoyable and well executed.

Alltogether a wonderful show, with a loud and lively crowd and three fabulous queens. Whether as an exciting and unique way to get your drag fix or the first step in dipping your toes into watching drag, “Drag Show the Game Show” is sure to make for a memorable night.
