It was a rush to make it to The Chalet at Perth Cultural Centre for 6pm, and my friend and I hurriedly caught up on our hectic days as the lights went down.

I’d invited her to join me to see Pear but had told her nothing about it. I’d seen Patrick McPherson’s solo show Colossal the week prior, which was absolutely incredible, I knew Pear would very much be its own entity.

Pear follows the framework of what Hugo and Patrick McPherson suggest is necessary for a good FRINGE WORLD show. This list sat centre stage but do not be fooled, this did not mean we could anticipate any one of the sketches or how they would play out. The hilarity that ensued had our faces aching from laughter.

Patrick and Hugo McPherson’s stage presence is among the very best at FRINGE WORLD. Their comedic chemistry is unrivalled, and the show is cleverly crafted. The sketches vary, keeping the audience fully engaged from moment to moment. Comedy is at the centre of Pear, but it’s clear that Hugo and Patrick McPherson are accomplished performers far beyond their comedic brilliance.

Any breaks from character only enhanced the show, with the twins catching each other off guard with some ridiculous ad-lib, and an audience member delivering a line on stage with the most unexpectedly excellent comic timing. They masterfully blend theatre with stand-up, and physical comedy with the absurd.

In the words of my friend, I wish I could see it again for the first time! Do yourself a favour and book a ticket to this show immediately. Take all your friends and family. These two are going to be known the world over, and you’ll be able to say, “I saw them at FRINGE WORLD Festival!”
