It’s really hard to review The Best of Fringe: The Late Show because they promise a different set of comedians every night. Basically, four comedians that are playing Fringe do short sets with the intention of giving the audience a bit of everything.
The Craft Beer and Cider Garden have done a great job of creating a venue in a very small space. Separated from the main strip of James Street with a curtain and offering a back drop of the bins (there are cute gates that close up and actually make an attractive back drop but the MC was very proud of performing in front of the bins) it is the ultimate in making the most of small spaces.
It is interesting to watch a mix of Australian, American, Canadian and British comedians. It actually made me spend a good hour or more googling opinions on the difference between American and Canadian humour vs British and Australian. The audience seemed to be much more favourable to the British humour than the US and Canadian comedians.
The final comedian was awesome. I’m devastated I didn’t get his name (he was trying to get on the stage and the MC was sort of trying to get the crowd hyped after a bit of a flat show so we didn’t hear his name), he was great! Really funny. He described himself as mixed race English and West Indies and I’ve tried googling him to see if I can find his name, I’ve been through every Fringe comedy offering to see if I can spot him. It’s not very helpful to read a review that says ‘there was an English comedian who was great. I don’t know his name but he describes himself as mixed race and brown and not just from the sun’ but that’s all I’ve got sorry.
He knew exactly where to pitch the show and he had the audience all laughing along. He was a natural on stage and that is 100% where he belongs.
The good thing about these shows is that it gives you a great opportunity to get tasters of different comedians and find ones you love and really want to see their shows, and ones that actually you might give a miss (even though their poster looks great and you were considering going). We have found some favourites at Fringe with this show over the years.
