Massaoke: Rockstar weekend was our 4th show of the night, it didn’t start until 11.25pm and didn’t finish until 12.45am! It was still stinking hot and we had to move the car because the car parks close at midnight. The temptation, when we got in the car and turned the aircon on, to just keep driving and go home was real!
We pushed through the temptation and parked. The show is in Liberty Theatre. I’m calling these venues ‘reclaimed buildings’ they are very grungy and funky and oh my goodness the air-conditioning was amazing!
When it was time to go into the show, which was in a warehouse type space up a ridiculous amount of steps. It was just a massive empty room. A stage at one end and a small temporary bar at the other (who got those fridges up those stairs???) not even a single chair. I said to my plus one if we lasted 1/2 hour I’d be amazed! I thought we would be out and on our way home by midnight!
Then they started to the intro of A Team, I could tell they were not going to take themselves seriously and this was going to be a lot of fun. They were brilliant. Together we sang small clips of SO many hits from the 80s 90s and 00s.
I was really worried in that time slot it might be quite empty, nothing worse than 5 band members and 5 audience members singing into a massive space – especially since I can’t hit a note to save myself! It wasn’t heaving but there was a really good sized crowd belting out the songs. The audience were all there to have a good time, there was dancing, jumping, singing and lots of laughter and fun.
The lead singer/keys was ‘totally rock and roll’ in his spandex outfit with modern day cod piece, especially when he got out his flute! Not saying a flute isn’t rock and roll but when I think of rock and roll a flute isn’t the first instrument to come to mind! Lead guitar could seriously play and had a great voice especially for Prince, bass guitar and drummer were great fun and the DJ was awesome. It is a fabulous band.
Midnight came and went and at 12.45 when they were leaving the stage I was right there with everyone else screaming for more! Such a feel good way to end the night! 10 out of 10 would recommend!
