Want a show that keeps you on the edge of your seat? Not in fear, but in delight--What mad, absurd thing will happen next? Well then, ‘Captain Spaceship: Operation Goon Squad’ is the show for you!
Right away we knew we were in for some fun when the audience was asked to participate by choosing and naming aspects of the show. A prop (a toaster with super gravity), an activity (hitting the gym), and a title (Operation PG).
This is a long running show that continues its story from each performance to the next, entirely unscripted and with a cast that quickly ad-lib like the expert improvisers they are. There is a regular cast with guests who pop in each night to add to the excitement. Fabulous musical underscoring, clever lighting and special effects all instinctively created by the talented and zippy backstage crew.
The sci-fi based storyline had some wonderfully ridiculous characters, our favourite being Shane Adamczak playing The Blizzard Lizard, “Fear Me!” A half man, half lizard who could swap in and out, is he the more creepy, bumbling lizard, or more human Ned Flanders style Dad? Whichever character he was, he was hysterically funny. We chatted to some children after the show and they loved him too, “He was silly.” The Blizzard Lizard might have his own spin off show, ‘Bliz-Liz the Wiz of Show Biz’, if he does, I’d go to that!
Other madcap characters included Lord Demon Shadow--“My moustache or my life, such a hard choice!” Dust—the powerful female Captain similar to Rey from Star Wars, and Mac—the wannabe Captain crew member. Plus, the guest, Andromeda--the desperate intergalactic influencer.
Adults and children were laughing at the slow-motion fight scene and we all loved the gruesome death scene of the Blizzard Lizard eating Andromeda’s gizzards. Not surprisingly this is the fourth year of Weeping Spoon Productions bringing this award-winning show to FRINGE WORLD. Audiences are keen to tune in for the next episode, like the audiences did to their inspiration the famous Goon Show.
Would we come back for the final episode? Yes, we would!
