When you go to this show, you know what you're in for because it says so in the title. No, it's not a four-letter word laden comedy, although it is very funny, but it's self-confessed dirty-minded jazz diva Jessie Gordon delighting us with a series of unmistakably innuendo laden songs from the early 20th century, when you had to be creative to sing about the joys of sex.
Witness this: 'I Want a Little Sugar in my Bowl', 'Tight Like That', (I Like to Stroke) My Girl's Pussy, 'Keep on Churnin' (Until the Butter Comes) and 'Long John Blues' (about a well-endowed Dentist 'drilling' a delighted recipient). You get the idea. But what I can't show you is how Ms Gordon plays up the lyrics with her face, intonation, moves to draw out more from them and guffaws from the audience. It's a reminder to everyone that sex wasn't invented in the late 20th century, although the late, great Betty Davis certainly threw out any ambiguity in the early 1970s.
The 'Clean Living' part of the show is Jessie singing several of her own compositions which prove how fabulous a composer and lyricist she is. Accompanied by a superbly talented band: (ridiculously talented) Mark Turner on vocals, guitar and sax, Karl Florisson on double bass and Michael Turner on the drums, Jessie and crew were completely present and enjoying the ability to play live and share their love of music with everyone.
And from the very full Ellington Club audience, it was clear they were with the band every innuendo, pun, double entendre and nudge/wink of the way. But of course they were, because they knew what they were in for. As I did. And like any good butter churnin', I wanted more. So, you're hitting 'buy tickets' right now to go get your... (insert body part/organ of choice) tickled.
