Bridezilla is a brand new musical rom-com, showing at the Sewing Room. This one hour bridal extravaganza is a musical farce, centred on the Bridezilla and her bridal party.
Bridezilla is packed full of some of Perth’s best talent, who take on this mad dash of a show with bucket loads of energy, enthusiasm and tongue in cheek melodrama. The nine person cast squeezed onto the tiny stage at the sewing room to sing, dance and vamp their way through a huge variety of numbers from just about every musical style imaginable, from Les Mis style “let me talk/sing at you for the next 3 minutes” to the teeny-pop style “pretty girl”.
Some of these songs were more successful than others; particular highlights were the titular song, Bridezilla and the groomsmen number, “Apricot or Peach” which both had the audience roaring with laughter and applause. Unfortunately, some of the other numbers would benefit from some revision to fit better with the action/ plot tempo.
The singing was generally of a high standard, although individual songs suffered from the lack of functioning microphones which would have assisted in balancing the cast.
The choreography was a major feature of the show, with many of the numbers featuring some charming character choreography that added to the farce stylings. Similarly, the script moved along at a breakneck pace, with no dips in tempo or action.
For an initial season, this show is an passionate and spirited musical comedy. While it will certainly benefit from future refinement after its initial season, the packed Thursday night audience loved it and it closed to uproarious applause and laughter.
