You So Smooth: EFA in concert, is the concert performance of Efa’s debut album, You So Smooth, and the debut of Efa as a solo artist.

In the one-hour long concert, the audience was treated to Efa’s original musical creations, both instrumental and sung, and with a mix of live band and pre-recorded backing tracks. Accompanying EFA on occasion were a troupe of 4 dancers and 2 backing singers.

Efa’s music has a distinctive pop funk and flair to it, and it had the audience bopping along from the beginning. The highlights were some particularly witty rap lyrics, and also some exceptional electric guitar riffs in the instrumental numbers.

Efa co-choreographed the performance, and the dancing was well executed and fit the music appropriately. The costumes were predominantly an array of sparkly onesie numbers that didn’t quite fit with the vibe of the music, and drew focus from Efa, who should have been the main attraction. At one point the dancers appeared in a simpler all black tee and shorts combo that fit much better, and supported rather than overpowered the lead singer. Of particular note in the dancing was a stunning Isis wing dance, which looked breathtaking with the lighting design.

The order of the production could have been improved; there were several videos interspersed between songs, presumably to cover costume changes, that interrupted the flow. The ordering of the songs also resulted in much shuffling of the band and backing singers on and off the stage, which again, detracted somewhat from the music.

Overall, Efa’s music shone; the songs were well produced and lovely to listen to. I have no doubt that this season was a successful launch for the album, and has introduced a range of new audiences to Efa’s work, which well deserves more air time.
