Cameron the Magician is no Harry Houdini, mostly because the latter is dead, and the former is an entirely different person. But Cameron the Magician is able to perform a feat that even the great Houdini neglected to attempt; predicting the dress-sense of a small child’s drawing, with a sock-colour accuracy rating of exactly one hundred percent. Additionally, Cameron the Magician is - despite being restrained by a variety of shackles, locks, and chains - ultimately able to escape from his very own jacket. Did Houdini ever perform such a daring outfit escape? Unlikely. He probably never even met Cameron's jacket.
Cameron the Magician can shuffle a deck of invisible cards, and turn children into bespectacled guards. He can pull off heists with twists you won’t see coming because he already knows where you'll look. Cameron’s quirky tricks and comedic escape attempts are more than just classic expressions of misdirection and cheeky sleight-of-hand; here is a magician who tests the audience's suspension of disbelief (and their incidental knowledge of fractions, for some reason) whilst delivering effortless off-the-cuff comedy.
Cameron the Magician’s Alaza-Cam ends with the titular magician teaching audience members how to perform simple tricks of their own, requiring nothing but a piece of torn tissue. His banter is casual and unpretentious (except where pretence is required, of course) creating a comfortable two-way-exchange with his ever-engaged audience.
Parents and teachers of specific varieties will appreciate Cameron’s ability to disappear children, live on stage. I’d like to see Harry Houdini do that! Not to worry, they’re almost certain to reappear in one piece. The child, that is. And the aforementioned tissue. Not so much Houdini.
Did Houdini ever reveal his professional secrets to a cheering crowd, or perform several underwear-themed gags in a row? Maybe. But so did Cameron the Magician, and it was amazing, according to the audience.
More than one human being is going to grow up to be a magician as a direct result of having seen this show. I hope it’s me.
